Alyce S. Adams, PhD, Professor, Department of Health Policy and Epidemiology and Population Health, Stanford University
Research Description: The overall goal of the Health Innovation, Policy, and Equity (HIPE) Lab is to advance our understanding of persistent disparities in chronic disease treatment outcomes and inform health system and policy innovations that promote health equity. Dr. Adams’ research program uses a multidisciplinary team science approach to understand and address system and policy-level determinants of persistent disparities in diabetes treatment outcomes. For example, she and her colleagues were among the first to employ quasiexperimental designs to study the effects of Medicare Part D on racial disparities in access to essential medications among adults with diabetes. More recently, her studies have focused on reducing the burden of lower extremity complications, including conducting a large-scale pragmatic trial and leveraging machine learning to predict adverse events (e.g., falls, ulceration). Dr. Adams co-directs the NIDDK funded DREAMS (Diabetes Research for Equity through Advanced Multilevel Science) Center for Diabetes Translational Research (CDTR), which aims to catalyze the development and implementation of innovative, high-impact, and sustainable interventions to improve diabetes outcomes and promote health equity. In addition, she serves on the executive committee for the SDRC. Dr. Adams serves on the Stanford NORC Internal Advisory Committee (IAC). Dr. Adams collaborates extensively with members of the NORC.
