Dimpi Nitin Desai, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, Stanford University

Research Description: Dr. Dimpi Desai’s research primarily focuses on the intersection of type 2 diabetes and obesity, particularly in the context of clinical practice where she treats a significant number of patients with these conditions. One of her current projects examines the impact of continuing versus discontinuing GLP-1 agonists and GLP-1/GIP dual agonists after bariatric surgery on weight loss and metabolic parameters. Traditionally, these incretin hormone-based therapies are discontinued post-surgery, but with emerging evidence supporting their continued use, Dr Desai is studying the differential outcomes between these two approaches, with a focus on both weight loss and potential nutritional deficiencies. Additionally, she is interested in investigating the risk of sarcopenia in Asian patients treated with incretin-based hormone therapies. While these medications are effective for weight loss and glycemic control, there is concern that they may contribute to muscle mass loss in this population. Her ongoing research, for which she has submitted a grant proposal to the NORC, aims to assess the extent of this risk and its implications for patient care. Dr. Desai collaborates extensively with NORC member, Dan Azagury.
