Seung K. Kim, MD, PhD, KM Mulberry Professor, Department of Developmental Biology and of Medicine, and (by courtesy) Department of Pediatrics, Stanford University

Research Description: The Kim group studies pancreas developmental biology and cancer biology in several models, including fruit flies, pigs, mice, and humans. They have discovered cellular, molecular, and genetic mechanisms governing growth, cell fate, and development and function of endocrine cells in mouse and human pancreas. Kim has directed the P30-funded Stanford Diabetes Research Center (SDRC) since its inception in 2016. He also directs the Islet Research Core in the SDRC. His training in internal medicine and oncology, and past or present participation and leadership in NIDDK consortia focused on islet biology and diabetes, including the Beta Cell Biology Consortium (BCBC), the Human Islet Research Network (HIRN), the Accelerating Medicines Partnership (AMP-T2D), the Chronic Pancreatitis, Diabetes and Pancreatic Cancer (CPDPC) consortium, and co-directing the Northern California Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) Center of Excellence are also relevant to this proposal. This background supports his participation as co-lead of the proposed NORC enrichment program. Kim's group has collaborated with multiple research base investigators in the NORC at Stanford on obesity research, including Drs. Peter Jackson and Danny Chou, with a focus on islet adaptations to obesity. He also helped organize the development and writing of the Stanford NORC proposal. In addition, Dr. Kim serves on the NORC Internal Advisory Committee (IAC).
